GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The primary purpose of this position is to improve client access to existing programs and to ensure consistency of care to alI public health clients. This worker will provide a link between the community and health care services for Latino patients. This position will also assist the medical staff in communicating medical information to clients whose primary language is Spanish. The ultimate goal is to provide optimal care to Spanish speaking patients in order to facilitate a health community.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this position. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the position as necessary.
• Interpret information face to face and by phone for Spanish-speaking patients interacting with English-speaking primary care providers.
• Work with staff in clinical settings to communicate medical information to clients and assist with making appointments.
• Reinforce provider’s instructions while displaying empathy and understanding.
• Assist other health care staff as needed with Spanish-speaking clients.
• Utilize the Interpreter Request dashboard to input data for tracking purposes.
• Return calls to Spanish speaking clients to assist with making an appointments or other requested services.
• Call patients for appointment reminders, to follow up on missed appointments, and for required treatment information, providing feedback to clinic staff as necessary to assist patients.
• Answer the general Departmental phone line for incoming Spanish calls, directing clients to needed services, assisting with making appointments, and sharing local resource information.
• Translate clinic letters and notices, patient information and internal documents as needed. Assist with translation of bulletins and reports shared with the public by the Administrator.
• Work at shelter assignment in case of a declared emergency.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
• Fluent in both English and Spanish.
• Working knowledge of medical terminology in both English and Spanish.
• Knowledge of local community resources.
• Knowledge of and the ability to apply HlPAA standards.
• Ability to work independently and to apply customer services principles.
• Data entry and time management skills.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
• Ability to translate/interpret all verbal information and written materials in English and the foreign language.
• Basic knowledge of the ethics of interpreting.
• Ability to assess communication skill level of client and exercise judgment in determining services to be rendered.
• Ability to understand and interpret information in the various dialects of that language.
• Working knowledge of the program area.
• General knowledge of office processes and procedures.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Graduation from high school or GED and one year of related experience demonstrating a fluency in English and the foreign language(s) necessary to successfully perform assigned job duties; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
PREFFERED QUALIFICATIONS:
• Medical Interpretation Certification preferred

Identified DCoDPH HCP with potential Bloodborne Pathogen (BBP) exposure have an additional requirement for the Hepatitis B vaccination. Required vaccination, serological testing to determine immunity, and baseline tuberculosis screening are available for all Public Health employees who elect to become DCoDPH patients upon request and at no cost.
Proof of vaccination and tuberculosis screening must be provided to Human Resources within seven (7) business days prior to the date of employment.
