GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
This Public Health Nurse Supervisor position is employed in the Family Planning Clinic within the Women’s Health Program. The position may be required to provide nursing services and support in other Public Health Medical Services Division clinics and community programs. The Family Planning Clinic provides comprehensive contraceptive services with the purpose of preventing unwanted pregnancy and reducing infant mortality.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provides onsite clinical and administrative supervision of staff in the Family Planning Clinic;
- Coordinates and collaborates with other Nurse Supervisors and Nurse Managers to mentor, organize, and direct staff in meeting department objectives and goals;
- Monitors clinic use of resources and advises Program Manager on budgetary needs;
- Provides information to staff related to rules, regulations, and expectations for the program as directed by Public Health, local, and state policies;
- Sets work standards for Family Planning Clinic staff, reviews written documentation, and observes clinical skills of staff;
- Serves as a resource for all staff on reproductive health services questions;
- Practices as a registered nurse in the Family Planning Clinic and functions in other areas of the department as needed;
- Performs related tasks as required.
- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Requires thorough knowledge and skill in applying principles and techniques employed in public health in general and in contraception in particular.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in day-to-day activities and be flexible and receptive to change in dealing with staff and agency needs, changing program requirements, and client populations.
- Ability to plan, coordinate, and supervise the work of others and to present findings, comments, and opinions clearly and concisely in oral and/or written form.
- Ability to exercise good judgment in appraising situations and making decisions.
- Ability to plan and execute work effectively and to deal tactfully with the public and other health professionals.
- Ability to record the services rendered accurately and interpret and explain records, reports, and medical instruction.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Considerable knowledge of public health nursing supervision of staff and programs.
- Ability to act as a resource person for other supervisors and Public Health staff and other community agencies or individuals on reproductive health topics.
- MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Master’s in Nursing and two years of Public Health nursing experience; or graduation from a four-year college or university with a B.S. in Nursing which includes a Public Health Nursing rotation and three years of Public Health nursing experience; or a Master’s in Public Health and graduation from a school of professional nursing and two years of Public Health nursing experience; or graduation from a school of professional nursing and four years of professional nursing experience three of which must have been in Public Health; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
•Requires license to practice as Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the NC.
SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in North Carolina by the NC Board of Nursing.

Required vaccination, serological testing to determine immunity, and baseline tuberculosis screening are available for all Public Health employees who elect to become DCoDPH patients upon request and at no cost. Proof of vaccination and tuberculosis screening must be provided to Human Resources within seven (7) business days prior to the date of employment.
