The primary purpose of the Environmental Health Specialist is to protect the public from disease and improve the quality of life in Chatham County by enforcing public health laws, including those related to onsite wastewater, wells, and all other rules and regulations delegated for enforcement by the Department of Health and Human Services; and local board of health and county ordinances related to environmental health, including the County Well Ordinance. This position reports to the On-Site Wastewater Supervisor.Essential Functions

- Enforce state rules and statutes related to onsite wastewater systems that are delegated to the Health Department jurisdiction, including site evaluations, inspections of installation of existing system approvals, and writing permits and keeping accurate and detailed inspection records as mandated by the state;
- Enforce local well ordinances, including siting wells, inspection, and permitting of the construction of the wells and keeping accurate and detailed inspection records as mandated by the state;
- Investigate environmental-related complaints;
- Participate in education and training;
- Serves during a response to a public health emergency, which may include outbreak investigations, staffing mass dispensing or immunization clinics, staffing shelters during disasters, or being a member of a division, department, or county-wide committee;
Performs other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree or a postgraduate degree from a program that is accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC); or a Bachelor’s degree or a postgraduate degree in Public Health and one or more years of experience in the field of environmental health practice and has earned 45 quarter hours in physical, biological, natural, life, or health sciences.
- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

- Knowledge of environmental health laws, rules, and procedures;
- Understanding of the concepts of public health law;
- Considerable knowledge of microbiology, biology, soil science, chemistry, epidemiology, entomology, and basic engineering technology as applied to environmental health practices;
- Ability to relate to clients in a positive manner;
- Excellent listening skills and the ability to accurately follow instructions;
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, department heads, peers, associates, and the general public.
