General Statement of Duties

Performs difficult skilled human support work coordinating, managing, and participating in assisting clients participating in the WIC Program, performing nutrition assessments, prescribing plan of care based on client needs, providing nutrition education and counseling to clients, preparing and maintaining files and records, and preparing reports.

 

Distinguishing Features of the Class

An employee in this class coordinates and manages the WIC Program. Work involves assisting clients with their nutritional needs. Work also involves assessing clients to determine nutritional needs, prescribing a plan of care and WIC food package based on their needs, and providing nutrition education and making

referrals to health care providers, preparing and maintaining files and records, and preparing reports. Work is performed under the general direction of the Deputy Human Services Director-Health and is evaluated by a review of records, reports, discussions, observation, client feedback, and in terms of the overall accuracy and quality of the work. Continuous supervision is exercised over the Nutritionist II and Foreign Language Interpreter I.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Tasks

  • Manages the daily operation of the WIC Program to ensure quality and timely services are being provided in accordance with local and State, laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Supervisory responsibilities include – Recruits and selects personnel; develops schedules; assigns, directs and inspects the work of personnel; coaches, counsels, disciplines and evaluates the work of assigned personnel; recommends transfers, promotions, demotions, suspensions and terminations.

  • Assesses the nutritional status of clients; prescribes appropriate plan of
  • Provides nutrition education and counseling to clients; develops goals with clients based upon assessment
  • Prepares the annual operating budget; approves and monitors
  • Prepares and submits various reports and other types of correspondence; prepares and maintains files and
  • Assists in planning annual vendor training and vendor applicant training; completes required vendor paperwork and reviews documents for accuracy prior to submission to the State.
  • Receives, investigates and documents complaints about and from vendors pertaining to clients; forwards complaints to the State WIC Program and/or USDA if warranted.
  • Makes appropriate referrals to medical providers and social service programs based on findings from the medical and eco-social assessment.
  • Provides clients with information about various food packages and formulas; prescribes and discusses appropriate food packages for clients based on medical needs.
  • Plans and implements outreach strategy to meet required participation and caseload
  • Issues food packages and breastfeeding
  • Coordinates individual and group counseling sessions, nutrition workshops, training, or consultation to paraprofessional and professional staff, the general public, and community agencies or groups.
  • Prepares requested materials and assists in biennial program review by the NSB monitoring team; develops and assures implementation of any required corrective action.
  • Attends various meetings as required.

Physical Requirements

  • Work requires the occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force to move
  • Work occasionally requires sitting, standing, walking, reaching with hands and arms, using hands to finger, handle, or feel, frequently requires repetitive motions, and regularly requires speaking or hearing.

Desirable Education and Experience

Graduation from a four-year college or university with a degree in nutrition, dietetics, or related field and considerable experience in nutrition, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Special Requirements

Possession of Registered Dietitian license upon hire.

Complete NC Lactation Education Program training within six months of hire. Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
