This is an intermediate level professional responsible for assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients of all ages including performing appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including patient counseling. Work will be providing care in the areas of Adult Health, Child Health, Family Planning, and STIs.

Responsibilities include: giving medical diagnosis, ordering therapy, and prescribing medications; obtaining a through patient history and physical examination; performing appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures; recording and presenting information to the physician; developing and maintaining health care and therapeutic plans; and counseling patients. An employee in the position will be practicing under the supervision of a medical preceptor (who is ultimately responsible for the employees medical practice) with the physician immediately available by telephone.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Comprehensive knowledge of County and Department policies and procedures; comprehensive knowledge of applicable State laws, rules and regulations governing medical care; comprehensive knowledge of techniques of interviewing, medical and relevant history taking; comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of general medicine and disease states; thorough knowledge of health appraisal techniques and therapeutic procedures; thorough knowledge of medications; thorough knowledge in preparing reports and other types of correspondence; thorough knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software (e.g. Patagonia software); comprehensive knowledge in the use of the equipment required for the position (e.g. colposcopy scope and surgical implant equipment); ability to make arithmetic computations; ability to compute rates, ratios and percentages; ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, physicians and associates.
Physical Requirements
This work requires the frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, walking, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions, frequently requires lifting and occasionally requires sitting, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and pushing or pulling; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s-length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and occasionally requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from a Physician Assistant program approved by the N.C. Board of Medical Examiners and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners, and preferably one year of experience as an extender; or graduation from an accredited Surgeon’s Assistant Program of at least 24 months duration and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Board of Medical Examiners; or licensed as a Registered Nurse by the Board of Nursing, graduation from a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the N. C. Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and “approved to practice medical acts” based on education and experience by the Joint Subcommittee, and preferably one year of experience as an extender; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Preference will be given to those applicants with bilingual expertise.
